May 30, 2014 - Gareth Hampshire, CBC News
A unique approach to entrepreneurship in Maskwacis aims to inspire people think creatively and start businesses on the reserve.

The reserve, formerly known as Hobbema, has long struggled with high unemployment and social issues. However, a relatively new program that teaches entrepreneurial and business skills has been a huge success.

In the first two years the course was offered, 28 of the 34 participants who completed the nine-month program are gainfully employed or are running a business, which run the gamut from transportation to jewelry to graphic design.

Entrepreneurs are Changing it Up!

September, 2013 - Nipisihkopahk Education Authority Newsletter

Change it Up! Entrepreneur (CIUE) is a unique training program that takes people step-by-step through the process of starting their own business. The first 6 month session started in Samson in the summer of 2012 and our third session will start at the end of October (look for registration info at the Samson HR office).

To get experience and build skills, participants work as a group to start and run a community business.  Our recent Session 2 graduates initiated the incredibly successful Cree Market, the largest traveling community event in the region, with vendors, entertainment, and live broadcasting from Hawk Radio.  In total, over 12 businesses have been started by our Session 1 and 2 graduates.  Visit our website, changeitup.ca to learn more.

Change it Up! Entrepreneurs was developed by Classroom Connections, with support from AANDC and the Government of Alberta. Based on his community development experience in Northern Alberta, Derek Bruno worked closely with Heather MacTaggart of Classroom Connections to bring this program to the community.
